Yes but that will be a powerful political moment. Stocks go up when it passes, then down when he vetoes, pressure to get that 2/3 and overall good press/evidence for the Dems/resistance.
We don't want this to succeed. We want him to keep the tariffs so the resulting recession takes him down, along with Trumpism and hopefully the very idea of conservatism for a generation.
I have to support a family. I don't want a recession, let alone a depression.
But if a depression convinces the dumb benighted masses of the USA that "right-wing populism" is monumentally stupid & hurts them personally, well, that's better than Trumpist totalitarianism & mass murder
True, economic pain is probably fastest way to get a big turn in public opinion. But Congress should still force the issue and continue fighting, make him double down and put stamp on it.
Also the reaction to the kind of pain weathering this will incur is not predictable. I do think we’ve crossed the “touching the stove” rubicon to some degree, but there’s no guarantee what happens after is better.
yes, unpredictable for sure. part of the chaos and extremism/propaganda/conspiracy theory stuff in RW spaces is reliant on fear and uncertainty… this will create more fear, uncertainty, misery, and probly lot of maga will double down.. in 3 months it will be “see? the whole world is against us!”
Yes, it will be interesting to see if Trump voters can draw the proper conclusion that the stupidity of the tariffs aren't a hiccup in Trumpism but part of a whole web of stupidity.
The MAGA base -- maybe 30% of the population -- and low-info swing voters who were like "Egg prices high, must be Biden's fault," are two very different groups of Trump voters. Pretty sure the latter will blame Trump for this clusterfuck.
For four years? I agree with the sentiment, but I'm living off retirement savings. The current stock market decline combined with inflation created by tariffs will erase my savings from both ends. Age discrimination and the coming recession will make finding a job difficult.
If our Congress does not do everything in their power to stand up for the American people and try to prevent/minimize harm to us, then they're abdicating their responsibility while simultaneously making themselves null. I'm not okay w/letting them "lay back & take it" to score politically.
Trump will figure out a way to crash the economy one way or another. This is fracturing the Rs (finally!!) once the Rs fracture and the cult is broken, the shame and change will set in. He will then be a paper tiger.
I don’t get why resolutions corresponding to a power vested in Congress that is wielded by the President only at its blessing (such as taxation) can be vetoed by the President.
If they vote to override it, it becomes law. That said, if he just doesn’t sign it (rather than vetoes it), there is no override mechanism. That’s what’s known as a pocket veto.
Yup, but even if Trump vetoes it's politically as important just to force Republicans to take an official stance via an up or down vote.
If they vote against, then they are publicly opposing Trump's policies (which will hurt them with Rs). If they vote in favor, then it hurts with Ind voters
💯 just explaining the numbers. As with impeachment, I’m not saying we shouldn’t do the right thing because it’s not easy. (Too many negatives in that sentence?) We should empty the toolkit.

A global depression caused by yanking the largest economy out of global trade is another.
*even these hurt a lot of people who did not FA
