Ok I was told, correctly, that I threaded about this back at the old place. So the quick and dirty is that we looked at a purposive sample of 8 newspapers and explored how they explicitly discussed race and racism (not inferences or dog whistles) from 2006 to 2021

We found a big uptick around 2018 in the share of articles mentioning anything about race or racism in articles that include a mention of student loans and articles that are actually about student loans (stats in alt)

Given the big rise in explicit discussions of race and racism in student loan news articles, we decided to breakout the trends by newspaper. We find evidence that the AJC and Philly Inquirier are more likely to discuss race and racism while the WSJ and Chicago Tribune almost never do (stats in alt).

Our big push to other ed policy (and really public policy) researchers is that conducting research on things beyond policy impact is crucial for efficacy and justice

You can check out the article for all the other stuff we do (comparing mentions of "racism" to "black", regressions to explore what about newsrooms is correlated with language, examining the other words in sentences with talking about race to see how it's being discussed).
