I used to work near Tadcaster and had to drive through the middle of the town daily to get there. The anachronism of the Sammy Smith's dray horses amused me at first, but was evidently a cause of bizarre traffic delays most mornings.
It’s a long read that I shall do properly later. A few years ago I started sometimes cycling through Tadcaster & I was intrigued that the centre had so many lovely (& presumably valuable) old buildings in an apparently abandoned state. After reading about Smith I presumed it was likely down to him
The thing is I frequently go into Sam Smith’s pubs because they are cheap and bad and the landlord might tell me to fuck myself and being British that appeals to every single atavistic impulse I have
