The dude writes exactly the kind of dollar store rhetoric that powered Euro fascist regimes.
Europe has known 100s of years of "religion" ($$$) and "nation" ($$$) wars, we know them by heart.
It speaks extremely poorly of Smith’s judgement that he regards an oafish reactionary like Lyons as worth reading to begin with.
He has the sense mostly to disagree with the horrendous excerpts he cites, but he doesn’t rebut them forcefully enough or challenge the underlying premises.
What current right-wing writers do you recommend reading then instead? Any names, any concrete manifestos/publications worth our time?

As is typical for Noah Smith, there would seem to be nothing especially insightful here, although I’ll concede that most of what he writes seems broadly unobjectionable, which is not usually the case for him.
And he imagines the fascist apologist he cites is somehow worth listening to…
So colour me unimpressed.
