We are literally threatening to remove Japanese Mormon Doctoral students for their "criminal" history.

Speaking up here might affect tax-exempt status (see threats aimed at Harvard). They're not going to risk that for this one person (not that I agree with it). I also hope to be proven wrong.

If you read the article, they link to another article that talks about how it's not just 1 person. They are targeting students all throughout Utah and the whole country. There will be more targeted at BYU. It's just a matter of time.

This is so interesting to see because the Church is pretty pro-immigrant, if not as much so as the Catholics; our American membership is a bit more anti-immigrant though, I think.

We seem to confuse political with partisan. Religion is inherently political - it teaches us how to structure communities, such as loving our neighbor and caring for the poor. These should be table stakes for any religion. We should avoid politics, just partisanship

I think you mean we should not avoid politics, just partisanship, yes? I agree, and the church used to, when it gave itself permission to speak on moral issues. Too bad the moral issues it speaks up on are rarely in favor of human rights.
