I don’t think autonomous vehicles (but *especially* FSD) will ever achieve this; city streets are complex systems designed for human perception & cognition. You’d need AGI before an onboard computer can make its own decisions about unforeseen circumstances that aren’t in its programming.
FSD don't have to be perfect. They need to be safer than non-FSD vehicles & drivers need legal protections from exactly this sort of accident that involves the FSD.
I actually think we're already headed down the road of adoption that won't be reversed.
Right, and I’m saying I don’t think it’s possible for AVs to be safer than human drivers in the context of city streets. Highways are another story (wide lanes, fewer complexities), and IMO that’s where AVs will have the best chance at being actually useful.
What's the accident rate of Teslas in FSD mode, vv human drivers?
With AI driving, theoretically when an issue occurs, it can be analysed and a fix applied to all affected vehicles so they will constantly improve. Humans? Not so much.
But it's still tragic & companies must be held accountable.
If Kamala doesn't cancel all government contracts and sick every federal agency on this sociopath on day one I will be deeply disappointed. And fucking get all governmental institutions off his fascist propaganda platform. Bankrupt his ass!
Expecting that autonomous vehicles will never be involved in accidents is surely an unrealistic position to adopt. The issue must be whether autonomous vehicles have more or less accidents than conventional ones.
The fact that this story is newsworthy suggests to me that they have fewer accidents.
What this story is about is not autonomous vehicles having an accident, it's about a manned vehicle running down a motorcyclist because the owner who was supposed to be paying 100% mistakenly thought they could stare at their phone in a FULL SELF DRIVING car.
no we must somehow blame the user, not the system, it must have been the user, the user used it wrong, the system is wonderful, soon it will drive us everywhere
All vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles or e-bikes should have transponders that exchange position data so that these types of accidents aren't able to happen. This is how boats and airplanes operate, why is it different for the roads!?
reminder that years ago the when the supplier of Tesla’s FSD camera sensors told Elon their sensors can’t do what he wants them to do, he fired them and found a different supplier
fwiw the explanation I've seen for why it hits motorcycles in particular (this isn't the first time) is that the closely spaced rear lights make the computer think it's a car that's much further away. so hopefully that doesn't happen with bicycles
yeah I'd generally be open to various "FSD is hard" explanations, but this specific issue is the very thing that Elon famously overrode his eng team on. It's directly traceable to a single person.
Musk is, among many other things, responsible for the confusion about terminology. But the writer switches back and forth between FSD and autopilot to describe the crash, then adds "Sometimes the names are confused by Tesla owners and the public."

Having FSD/Autopilot & expecting people to supvise it the whole time is a corp legal figleaf that is absurdly counter to human nature.
If a driver can be found at fault they go to jail. If a corp? a fine.
What will never be safe is "AUTOPILOT YOU DON'T HAVE TO WATCH THE ROAD NOW!*"
*fine print: you do actually have to watch at all times, why would you listen to Elon Musk he's just a joker

Convenience is driving it.

Would be great if every driver speeding or looking at their phone supported safer systems, for both vehicles and infrastructure

One of the best motorcycle youtubers made a great video about Teslas killing motorcyclists a few years ago: https://youtu.be/yRdzIs4FJJg?si=HqUjH3jbTlr_12Nr
