DOJ says the Attorney General has decided not to release the volume of Special Counsel Jack Smith's report that deals with Trump's possession of classified documents as long as the case against his co-defendants is pending.

That makes it very unlikely the report will become public.

"Terrible AGs" isn't a lily that requires such heavy gilding. OTTOMH, Bill Barr and Ed Meese come to mind; checking this DoJ list coughs up Jeff Sessions [ugh!] and Nixon's first AG (and Martha's husband), John Mitchell. https://www.justice.gov/ag/historical-bios As for pre-Nixon, historians could name a few.

All awful (honestly evil) AGs, but at least they were all advocating for the things they actually supported. Garland's gift is for protecting his political rivals, no matter how egregious their crimes (treason, espionage, etc.) for the sake of civility.

No Democratic administration can take any action, or allow any action to be taken, when that action may make Repubs feel bad. There are no circumstances when political expediency and simple respect for the rule of law outweighs comity with Repubs.
