Oceans has ties to Coasts of season 1, and in a way continues stories set up in that episode, in particular those concerning reefs. It also obviously takes things that much further into the oceanic realm…

The episode starts with a #mosasaur very different from the gigantic Mosasaurus of season 1, namely the small Phosphorosaurus of western Europe and Japan. Our aim was to highlight mosasaurian diversity, though primarily to showcase an ecologically unusual member of the group.

He's so big that we faced all kinds of problems in allowing for the opacity in the water that would interfere were you to try and look along his length. There was a lot of checking with similar footage of whales… #mosasaurs #PrehistoricPlanet

Phosphorosaurus belongs to a very different mosasaur group from Mosasaurus: it's a halisaurine, an anatomically less specialized group than the mosasaurines, most of which were (at 3-4m long) far smaller than Mosasaurus and with shorter, broader limbs.
