We didn't use public transport as were out in mountainous regions where there aren't buses or trains. All the roads around the capital (Dushanbe) were good and modern; in the mountains, things were as you'd expect but pretty good. A MASSIVE storm destroyed bridges and road on our last day though!

A whole bridge over a river was destroyed by this, our only route back to the capital. As we arrived, about 100 ppl were already there. They cut down trees, shifted rocks and rubble and repaired it in about 4 hrs. We helped, and as it came together we were first across, to much celebration :)

A long time ago I did a summer study at Univ of Washington where a lot of academics and students from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan had recently arrived and had set up a program. I tutored a student from Tashkent in English and she taught me some basic Uzbek.

Me too. This was a dream trip, it was incredible. We had no trouble moving around, getting supplies, or finding places to camp (we had local guides, who were brilliant).
