This works for me also. It’s not even an outline. Just random elements. I may not use any of it, but it shapes the characters for me.

I do something I call a “zero draft” where I allow myself to dump everything—ideas, scenes as they come to me, snatches of dialogue, character sketches… It allows me to play before imposing too much structure.
