A Liverpool win tomorrow opens up the possibility the manager only has to pick what he considers to be his proper first team 8 times in the period from Dec 30th to Mar 3rd.

Depends on the league cup really because you'd think we'd get through and you have to go strong against an arsenal or United by law in a semi final as much I wouldn't care if we went out next week
Neil might correct me - but I think with the likelihood that some big teams will be in those unseeded positions (lower than 8) you could end being 1st and playing Real Madrid. All depends on how it all plays out.
Ah ok, so the higher you finish in the league phase does come into play for seedings as they will then plot the route to the final based on that, plus the 2nd leg of the last 16 you get to play at home. But you’re right about not knowing the opponents, it’s just luck of the draw
Yeah just read that the last 16 follows the old CL format - 8 seeded teams (1st to 8th) in a draw vs 8 unseeded teams (8 play off winners from 9th to 24th)
Neil, am I imagining a rule about not putting live EPL games on at the same time as UCL/UEL (which would stop the derby being slotted in those Feb midweeks)?
Should (as expected) Liverpool finish top 8 and skip the round of 32 good the Everton game be played in one of those midweeks? Or does it have to be arranged before that?
Would you go strong in this one Neil? I’m generally in favour of maintaining a winning mentality, and we may have lost some momentum with the last league result, but feels like an opportunity to just focus on fitness and getting bodies back for a big winter push.
Fully agree. And after the last game being called off you'd want to get them back at it. I guess I just had the Girona game earmarked as one to rest a few, especially with the injuries we're carrying, but on the whole I think you're right, they play at their best when they're rolling game-to-game.
defo the postponement suited us to the ground after emotionally draining - as well as physically - Madrid, City, Newcastle all in a week.
No game for a week, go strong, strong vs Fulham who are no mugs & piss around with the LC - QFs are all PL so the semis will be a ballache. Losing could be good
Fair enough, and based on his form so far I'm pretty sure that's what the manager will do. A win to put this phase to bed would definitely make the winter run a lot easier. A lot to be said for that. Enjoy the game.

The point I was trying to make is that regardless of where we finish whether its 1st or 8th - there's no way of knowing who we'll play.
