"Why are my property taxes so high?"
it's the auto infrastructure. it's the roads, the paving and painting.
"It must be bike lanes! And homeless shelters! And all these new apartment buildings!"
no actually it's just the roads.

Another myth many drivers believe is that fuel taxes, registration fees, transfer taxes etc. somehow cover the massive cost of maintaining roads. They don’t, not even close. Everyone pays for roads, whether they drive or not.

You've still got enormous cars doing way more damage but...
All that weight on the road damages that infrastructure as well.
It becomes a cycle of failure very quickly (well, quick in infrastructure years).
(calgary has flooded again)
(calgary has left the chat)
But if they charge what they should, no-one will buy homes in the next expansion, which means they can't cover the costs of what exists.
For example: I live in Columbus, Ohio, where 64% of my property taxes go to Columbus City Schools. This is because Ohio's legislature has seriously screwed up school funding; property taxes were ~70% of school revenue in FY23.
But they never think about what it goes for and how those costs are rising.
There are while stretches of the suburbs where a single Quinpool Towers sized apartment building would half the road costs per household.
My man, you can’t afford to live in the suburbs either
But I'm also not sure that we have much else
There was outcry at one point when they put up like a garden and sign at the city limits
