Alright, onto the green hydrogen production tax credit. A bit more controversial. The hydrogen hype cycle of recent years has generated a high degree of mistrust and skepticism (quite rightly) - but let's not lose sight that it is a key ingredient in getting us to zero emission.

Key industries, like steel production - responsible for ~8% of global emissions, will almost certainly require green hydrogen to get to zero emissions as well as very high heat industry applications and some types of chemical production like ammonia.

Just to be clear, I see no role for green hydrogen usage in homes, transport, or most industrial usage. While there may be some use of green hydrogen for electricity peaking generation - my bets on easier fuels to store, like green methanol, for emergency electricity generation.

Yep, case for sea transport particularly in form of green ammonia. I used to think that was the case for long distance land transport, but the huge advances in battery energy density make me think electric will win thr day there too.

While we absolutely need green hydrogen, the problem today is that we are at the front of the deployment and production curve and its very expensive - preventing investment and offtakes.

The credit will help reduce this cost by providing a tax incentive of $2 per kilo of green hydrogen produced.

The policy is pretty firm in my view with emissions intensity requirements that make 'blue' hydrogen made from methane is ineligible as well as requirements for grid connected hydrogen production that will help drive new renewable energy investments and avoid coal lock in.

The gap in my view is the need to stimulate demand - the easiest way would be to mandate a green hydrogen mix for existing hydrogen use in Australia - or potentially starting with key end use industries, such as ammonia use by the mining industry.
