You need to better describe this phenomenon. Do you mean "warm up" as in actually getting hotter (might be relevant for spinning disks?) or as in spending time (pre)loading stuff from disk into memory?

It was to fake the boot-up speed. XP took a long time to boot compared to other operating systems at the time. To "fix" this problem the desktop would be brought up in the middle of the boot sequence, as opposed to the end of it.

Heh, I was setting up a Windows 10 box after an office move last week and had the same thing happen. 10 minutes after boot the startup programs were still coming up and prompting for things. So Microsoft hasn't gotten any better...

Exactly. And people, no he doesn't mean physically warm up. He means that there is a perceivable lag in performing any task and general latency in doing anything while the device is presumably finishing spinning up few background processes.

My Windows 10 installation does that. Flogs the C drive for about 20 minutes after you turn it on. Have no idea why. The process list says either 'System' or nothing. Time to blow it away and reinstall it I think.

Still happens if it's cold enough, my phone shutdown while skiing because it was too cold.
