This is not a time where European powers are inclined to "back down." It is also a time where they have had a long reckoning re: their own defense & dependence on the U.S. There have been major developments on this front over the past 2-3 years, given the threat of Trump.

They absolutely can't at this point. They're not fools. They see what's happening in the US. This is their fate if they're not properly aggressive with Russia. It already meddles with their politics, too, in just this way, and Russia is showing it can smash its puppet toys for effect.

This isn't 2019 or 2020 or whenever it was that Trump dabbled w/ "buying Greenland." The RU invasion of Ukraine changed everything, as did the realignment of the US rightwing w/ Russia. Greenlanders are EU citizens. Trump is threatening them. It's a bigger deal than we are currently expressing.

Greenland actually isn’t in the EU btw. They formally left, it took decades. They are still part of Denmark though which is a NATO state so technically aggression by the US could result in an article 5 response.
