So, honest question: Is it acceptable to have different styles as an artist?

Because I was just slapped down by someone else when I tried to suggest such a thing. And now I'm looking at my work and feeling like a complete and utter...I don't know, but the word isn't positive.

I’m glad! 💚 It’s a great question for an art director if you have a company you’d like to work for in mind. Ask them what they’re looking for now: backgrounds, character concepts, vehicles, etc. Then you can go through and present the best of your work that fits the criteria.

I'm actually not trying to work for a company. My artwork is for sale, yes, but I create what I want, freelance and untethered to anyone. I think that's why I was so confused when they were so harsh.

Then in that case, absolutely curate your portfolio to showcase your best works, regardless of subject matter or style! That’s what I do. If someone sees my work and wants to hire me for my style, great, otherwise, I’m happy doing my own thing. 😁

Honestly? I don’t really know. To be fair, if you’re looking to work with a specific company, or on a specific project, it’s probably best to tailor your portfolio to them. But, if you’re just looking to share a general overview of what you’re good at, or enjoy, feature what you want. (1/2)
