I thought that meat birds, as they are slaughtered young, are not as much at issue when it comes to AI as the older living egg hens. shouldnt the focus be on egg hens?

Layers are just kept until they don't lay productively. That's within years. Who cares why, just get rid of them. Get rid of them. They fall into a similar bin as male chickens that don't put the lbs on and then are sold to chicken by-product plants.
I dont know the first thing about supply lines. I imagine old laying hens might be used for pet food in which case the cooking and canning process should be safe. Birds with H5H1 wont get to a processor but culling flocks might go that way

My sister, not a farmer, suggested that all birds end up as meat birds eventually.
I wonder whether, despite ostensible changes after Mad Cow, they end up in livestock feed.
Occurs to me that if no one was checking that before, even fewer will do so now.
