people look at me funny when i tell them i dont like music. like not a specific genre, all of it. (then they usually tell me that i need to listen to their favorite song and it will convert me, but it never does)

I never thought I would ever meet someone who also doesn't care about listening to music as much as I do. Even your opinion on VGM's is the exact same as mine. I actually enjoy them more because there is "something" that I can attach those to. While with regular songs there's nothing.
To be fair, it is unusual. I fully respect it but science suggests that our brains are basically hard wired to be musical. It's poorly understood but it is very unusual for people to be genuinely not musical/not take pleasure from it.
So I get why people are surprised (no need to harass you though)
i suspect my other auditory processing issues have something to do with it. but yeah, was really hard to fit in as a kid who had no interest in music lmao
Ah shit I can only imagine, and I was just not listening to the "cool" music!
It's a super interesting topic though because basically nobody knows why we do music. It has no known evolutionary value and yet our brains are (on average) stupidly good at it.
you should just listen to- oh what's that, the post itself states saying that won't work? well why didn't you tell me that earlier? what do you mean I should've just read the post? what kind of social media manager are you? what's that? none of this is real and I'm just going insane? checks out tbh
As a music lover, I can absolutely respect that. I may joke like "how can you not like music bruhh" but to be absolutely honest, there's many people and as many experiences, so if you don't like it, then that's okay, I guess it's just not for you, sometimes it is like that
Yeah I had a friend a while ago who didn't listen to any music either. From someone who can't stand most "popular" music and especially music with people singing (im totally neurotypical) I kinda get it, but I still like listening to my niche genres (Signalwave/Mallsoft) and sometimes other genres.
Question though, have you ever played an instrument? Not necessarily producing beautiful music but like messing with a piano or bongos or something. That has to be a different experience I suppose
I relate so much to this lol my friends are always shocked by how low my spotify wrapped's listen hours are at the end of the year and I just.... I rarely listen to music, that's why 😅
I don't think I've ever listened to a wrapped. I'm not sure it could make one for me. I used Spotify for a job I had,but I only added songs to a giant playlist of the most popular songs every once in a while to keep it up to date. Once I stopped doing that job, I rarely open Spotify. I love silence!
I totally get that! Mine has mostly random songs I listen to once in a while, but I find music very distracting and can get nothing done while listening to it. Ironically, I'm always listening to audiobooks, though 😂
It's a general sound/noise thing for me. I love to read and read pretty fast, so I don't like audiobooks and I don't like talk radio aka podcasts. If there were only transcripts for them I'd read those.
I like music that gives me goosebumps, ones that you can just hear and have some kind of epic story happen in your mind while it plays(usually over and over).
It doesn't even matter the genre! Just anything that tickles that part of my brain.
this is so real, i cant get into music as well! sorry guys youre going to have to deal with me being not only partially deaf but the kind of guy whod turn of music in video games or the same song on loop for the 50th time
Honestly that’s quite surprising but I wouldn’t be too shocked about it. But curiosity kicks in: do you just sit in silence while doing stuff or is there some form of white noise in the background?
I can't relate because I really need something to be blasting into my ears 24/7 to prevent any thought from occurring 🤧 tbh I just like to block any noise that way too, I can't survive the outside without my headphones, especially public commute. Only acceptable place with silence is the forest/sea
Same, and when I'm not listening to music I always have a song stuck in my head and think "Damn, I can't wait to put my earphones on and listen to something"! Plus walking outside without earphones on actually makes me nervous 🙈
REAL 😭 earworm disease 💃 added benefit of being on your earphones all the time is that it's impossible to lose your phone or get it secretly stolen so I'd say it's big stonks
while I’m the complete opposite, I do also enjoy the silence sometimes. also try to keep an open mind; it is kinda annoying when people try to force you onto something that you don’t like, and I often find that if I just go at my own pace I enjoy it much more.
I also almost never listen to commercial/radio music, but I really like listening to musicals.
I find that I engage with music if it has a narrative component (film/game soundtracks I can associate to specific memories or visual scenes also work), but not so much if it's music for music's sake.
I can get with this, I love music, but there are plenty of days where either silence or just the ambience around me is more than enough stimulation for my ears.
As someone who's hella self conscious about being too loud when i eat, music is a nice substitute to the silence. But also valid if it's just not your thing
I used to really HATE songs in particular, since the voice got in the way of the melody for me. Now I'm more tolerant, but still prefer melody over voice in most cases.
Not saying that "you just need to listen to good songs", just sharing my experience since it's kinda similar.
People engage with music differently. I love music, I make it professionally, and it's core to my soul...but having music just playing all the time when I'm at rest or trying to work is sensory overload for me. I can totally get how someone else might just find it overpowering a lot of the time.
Ironically enough, this reminded me of a song about not liking coffee, trying it BC a coffee lover made the author a supposedly great cup of coffee, and still hating it xD
Also, reading the comments made me realize people actually listen to music solely for the music and not just as background noise or to get optimal engagement in their brain. Sure I enjoy listening to it but it's never my single focus. I'm shook
Music can be very special and powerful to some ppl so I can kinda see why they would feel pushed back by that. But yeah- it’s ur preference. Nothing deep about that
i know a guy like this and it always kinda blows my mind. i enjoy music so much i play music in my head when i'm not actively listening to it. to hear someone straight up... doesn't like music... it literally never occurred to me that was possible.
i’m someone who BIG relies on music but you’re not the first i’ve met who just doesn’t have the same attachment - and that’s perfectly ok! everyone has their things. i still like to offer those homies my music library if they ever get curious bc i listen to some random-ass shit.✌️
yeah its so annoying like just let us... not enjoy music its not that crazy (except that i found vocalsynth which i love but that doesnt mean everyone has some secret genre they adore)
But if you wanna know what music I dance to it is that. It's basically just rythm and beat, no long lyrics to actually sing to. Just EDM Dance https://on.soundcloud.com/jLAG3vjpUeoiRo8W8
Got called a sociopath because I’d drive my car in silence 🤣 I can enjoy music but I don’t NEED it there constantly. Rather listen to a podcast than music sometimes too
video game vgms are actually a little more tolerable to me because at least i can associate them with a particular experience and emotion. but i still dont listen to them intentionally lol
This is exactly how I feel about music. I don't listen to a specific band or album, but by the songs associated with my favorite video game experiences and movies.
oh, thats amazing! i have huge respect for musicans. in fact i like watching performances sometimes because the mastery is so impressive -- its just that the sound itself doesnt evoke anything in my brain like its apparently supposed to.
I would've stared at you just for the sake of my love for music 😂 But I would never push my likes to someone else's. That's one of the point of music too as an expression anw. It has to move you by itself, make you feel what it should. Not be told by people.
hmm, i wouldnt say i have noises i particularly like, but there are definitely noises i very much dislike. (the sound of fingers on balloons, or wet sneakers on floor)
It's always so fascinating when I see people who don't crave music on a daily basis, because I literally can't live without music, and a huge amount of my artistic vision/inspiration comes from music! Music practically flows in my bloodstream at this point.
Full respect ofc, everyone enjoys different things, but it does make me feel like a scientist observing a specimen just being like 'hmmmmm...no music? interesting very interesting...'
I can imagine, I can't stand some genres like Jazz and that's bad enough, people keep going 'you just don't get it, you don't listen to the right artist, you'll grow to love Jazz eventually'. We're free to like and dislike whatever after all.
I know people who don't like music in languages they understand (can't focus on other things while music is playing), so I always imagined not liking music is like that but with all of the music
The way I cannot fathom this at all,, For me it's less a case of "filling the silence" as much as it is taking in a form of artwork like a painting or film. Do you like poetry? Have you been to a concert?
That's valid tbh, I like the stimulation it gives me and use it to distract me from my thoughts while reading or doing schoolwork but it isn't for everyone! Do what you enjoy most, even if it doesn't always make sense to others.
This is fascinating to me because I am the polar opposite, but I also don't think there is a magic song that would change your mind or anything! Just an interesting perspective I'd never really thought about before.
Man, people should learn to understand the phrase "to each their own" and just respect others' preferences instead of trying to "convert" those who doesn't have the same interests as them
I love how people think they'll convert you or something. I'm definitely deeply emotionally invested in the music I like, but people try sharing their favorite music with me all the time too, and I'm just like "yeah, it's fine I guess?" Even within genres I like a lot
I think that it's the same thing with most popular hobbies, games, movies, books.
People assume that telling about their favorite piece, something might change
Can't relate. I was raised by a jazz pianist and I listen to music at every possible opportunity (without being rude to people around me). I'm always searching for tunes I haven't heard before.
As a music addict, I encourage you to keep it up. It's just another form of expression after all.
But you're still weird for not having at least 1 song that you like.
Then again, I can't name a single poem and some people don't like vtubers, animations, games, etc. So you do you.
Im basically like this, rarely i have a song or something that i really like so i listen for some days and then its over, im general music can even get me annoyed or even angry because i really like silence in general and >for me< when in listening music its because its a really bad day or mood
guess you could say your favorite song is... the sound of silence 🤭 get it? bc you don't like music so you listen to nothing but there's a song named the sound of silence by disturbed and it's funny bc blah blah blah blah...
I get it. The only time I feel like I want to listen to music is when I’m driving a car. But that’s maybe because I just want to drown out whatever noises the car is making.

Can relate, 'cause most people my age don't seem to understand that I *hate* coffee, and forcing me to taste it won't make a difference 🙃
The cult of the bean will not abide this insult.
(I am joking... And parroting similar - annoying - replies to similar discussions...)
💖
*gives a bad look to anyone who doesn't like chocolate, tho 🍫 (jk again 😆😘)*
It doesn't even matter the genre! Just anything that tickles that part of my brain.
I have no desire to “convert” ppl from who they are. They are cool as is. So are you.
But I'll never like a song that's heavy on lyrics unless I can follow along with captions.
Тебе нужна постоянная тишина?
Что насчёт ненавязчивых спокойных мелодий на фоне иногда? Что-нибудь из классики?
Я люблю музыку в равной степени с тишиной.) Всё, что душа попросит.
The song:
Did you ever get compared to the grandma from Coco?

The wiki is also pretty interesting
This breaks my heart as a music teacher 😭
Like what you like :)
Since I’m a nerd about music I catch myself watching along too— seeing the decisions that musician took to make that piece special to them.

All the power to you but i dont think i could last without it haha
Frank Zappa
What about music that's just singing and no rhythm?
Is it a sensory thing? What about elevator music? 👀
Do you like white noise? Or is it all consistent sounds?
(help.)
In her case, strong misophonia has always made it a no-go, but she also doesn’t have much interest.
It’s odd to me (I’m a total music nerd), but we have plenty of other stuff to talk about. 🤷
Didn't know people like you existed
I can't live without music. I need it constantly to work, to draw, when I go in public transit alone.
Without music my anxiety eats me whole 🥲
