Nobody should be using AI. It's built on stolen work!!! Dude, AI-assisted translation is absolutely terrible, get out of my feed and stop being disrespectful to real actual translators.
Classics are a great example. There are tons of translations that are more or less technically accurate but are still basically unreadable. It's an art.
If I see authors thinking that translation being done by AI is fine, I'm also going to conclude that they think it's okay for publishers to use AI to write their books 🙄
It will absolutely call to question the originality of their work and if they're using machine translation to write
"AI-assisted translation will continue to improve" this person says. Linguist me asks if LLMs don't store any semantic information, how can they translate anything, and how can those translations "improve" over time? 🤔
Also: totally with you on not using tools built with stolen work.
100%. Fiction translation in particular of course cannot possibly be done by machine as it will turn a profound work of art into pablum even if it doesn't make horrible mistakes.
It's bad enough when 90% of the patent applications I examine are machine-translated.
I understand why: the applicant is already spending a lot on attorney and application fees and high-quality technical translation is very costly, but it often leads to unnecessary rejections.
I can't give specific examples due to applicant confidentiality, but it's fairly common. Of course rejections are usually only a stage on the journey to eventual allowance. The majority of applications are initially rejected and have to be amended.

I'd basically have to start translating from scratch. It takes more time to fix the mistakes.
Can't believe this person is a writer gosh.
I will boycott and call out authors who support AI translation of literary works in any capacity.
