Kind of a serious post for once but some of the restrictions on protests I'm seeing pop up around the world are genuinely terrifying, even just in principle. (1/3)

My family lived through the troubles in Northern Ireland, a time where the rights to protest and political expression existed in theory, but were suppressed through restrictions aimed at marginalised groups the deployment of a heavily militarized police force, and eventually, the British army. Politicians will say restrictions on protests and the expansion of police powers are necessary for public safety, but know that those are the same lines that were used to "justify" brutalising protestors, holding political prisoners without charge, and opening fire into crowds of civilians. (3/3)
