I think beyond the opinion pages, news outlets often don't dig beyond the sound bites provided by those spreading misinformation. I get that news outlets are spread thin, but don't publish an article on it if you're not going to do due diligence.

If the Quadra-McKenzie plan in Saanich was any indicator, these kinds of engagement processes need to be handled exceptionally carefully, and there needs to be consequences for spreading false information.

Actually let's broaden that: in general, societally, we need consequences for misinformation

Right now the consequences for spreading misinformation are that you impress and motivate supporters, persuade some lower-information new people, and lose credibility with decision makers. So it's a mixed bag: ineffective advocacy but good grifting.

But it can result in representatives facing backlash (including being voted out) because of the extent of misinformation, so it can't just be shrugged off.

True, and this is often the motivation for circulating disinformation to low-information voters. Another form of grifting: dollars, votes, ratings, likes.

good morning Dave - the headline references a 10 year OCP. I thought, under the new legislation, that OCPs needed to be updated every 5 years with planning for a 20 year horizon.

1/2 Dave may have more info, but I believe this update started on the previous 10 year update schedule before the Bill 44 changes. Bill 44 required a interim HNR at the start of this year, an OCP update by the end of this year, a full HNR IN 2028, and an OCP update in 2030, and then every 5 years.

Good catch! Yes it would have been the 10 (-ish, more like 12 or 13) years as Jim noted. And now it will be every 5 years, which is much much better.

it's definitely a major cost for smaller municipalities - not all of them have the staff to figure this into a 5 year rotation, which then means outsourcing, which means even more money. Given that an OCP takes a full year minimum it seems heavy-handed.

I'm hoping that future OCP revisions can be lighter in weight. This one is huge because not only has the world changed a lot, but also we're simultaneously aligning zoning with the OCP. If the housing targets are even roughly OK, the 5 year revision could be mostly tweaks.
