Adhesive SBO is one of the leading causes of surgical emergencies; in UK it is the indication for ~50% of all emergency laparotomies. Post-operative adhesions are the leading cause of SBO. On average, ASBO results in 8 days of hospitalization & an in-hospital mortality rate of 3%

Between 20 and 30% of patients with ASBO require surgery. Length of hospitalization and morbidity depend on the need for surgical intervention. Average hospitalization after surgical treatment of ASBO is 16 days, compared to 5 days following non-operative treatment
