And of course levels of experience and level of polish expected in their profession can vary it.

I have encountered a 10 year veteran professional illustrator that can do what I would call a sketch in less than 30s and they call anything at pre-coloring a sketch.

Depending how moody + health some sketches can take me 10 sec, 5 minutes or 1 hr without interruptions
For a complete pice in traditional 3 hr or 5 days. For digital depending details and complexity can take me a day or 3 days

It’s a bit off-topic but Sometimes when I make art from my phone with my thumb it can take about 5 to 20 minutes depending on the art piece I’m working on.

Imny sketches are pretty detailed personally - I can't quite wrap my brain around just doing the details in lineart, though I will sometimes naturally add stuff.

I envy the folks whlv an more or less just scribble a few vague blobs for sketched and then instantly ink a hyper-detailed piece though.

The speed in which I complete an art work completely depends on my mood and if my mental issues are in the right alignment. I did notice that if I'm having a high day I rather spend time sketching and low days I enjoy inking/coloring process.

Most things I work on take me weeks to months. Hell I even have a few that are years old and not finished. I can't force myself to work on things so I just take my time normally. I only take issue with my speed when I'm making something for a friend cause I want them to see it ASP.

Whenever I do sketches, my sketches take 5 minutes to 20 mins and my finished works can take 2 days to a week... hahaha

I'm with you. Humble bragging is a thing, and it just makes other artists feel like shit when someone posts an obviously finished piece and says "LOL 15 minute sketch." No need to just lie about it.

Idk! Maybe don't let others set the bar for you, you know? It's such a contextual and superficial thing to compare about. Also, regardless of whether you think it's obviously finished, I still say let people self-describe their own process. If they're lying, it only speaks to their own insecurity.

Oh that’s so interesting! Do you find your sketches are really loose and you “find” the subject with the render, or does the rendering stick closely to the sketch?

My sketches tend to be loose and shape-y, then as I paint I sort of refine the shape and make changes as I need to. Sometimes, they can be quite different from the final result, really depends. Tho most of my wotk ends up being sonewhere in between the extremes in terms of time.

Yeah. I've gotten better, but I'm way too of a perfectionist. My story boarding buddy once jokingly mocked me with a 5 minute hummingbird doodle while I slaved away on a piece for weeks. No ill will. Made me laugh.
