I riff but also I really do love DnD, Pathfinder, Shadowrun, all those games with huge kits of bits and bobs and choice points for building a character and kitting them out.

A game with an overabundance of character design options (especially pre-kit) often, imo, is a better source of creative nucleation than an open-ended game of "I dunno, make whatever, I guess"

I agree, theory have to be lanes that have opportunity costs and visible forks, or you get point buy paralysis and samey middle of the road split the diffetence characters, tho

The funny thing is, for me, when you have a bunch of ingredients you can use straight or flip around or riff off of, they're less "restrictions" and more inspirations, like ime a lot of wild ideas wouldn't exist without someone else's base to jump off of

That's why I like collaborative character creation. Most of my best parties I've GM'd were characters that already knew each other going into the story. The Dresden Files RPG is not nearly crunchy enough for my liking but it actually has "describe your first adventure with each other party member"

as part of character creation, which I dig.

It's by no means the only way to achieve a unified party theme but it's a good one, and a unified party theme is one of the best ways to set your game up for success, in my experience.
