Let's be honest: the US could DOMINATE in Rugby if we hadn't developed our own spinoff of the original football that spread between england and the US and branched off into soccer, rugby, and american football.

The US has the talent pool, its just divided among a bunch of more local sports.

I wasn't being totally serious anyway, and you deffo have a point. Though I think the stop-start thing of American Football would suit the US team more to Rugby League than Rugby Union (and yet Union is the only one that seems to get played at all in the US, weirdly).

I will also say, people from Europe hate on the stop start thing about american football, but let's be honest, that's kinda in soccer too, its just less explicit. We just built the "let's pause for a second and just breathe easy part" into a system of breathers and controlled all out bursts.

When you look at the football family, soccer actually seems like the odd one out. The rest are all much more like Rugby. The idea of being able to pass the ball backwards is uncommon!

I think that's always been a part of sports because...yeah. There's a reason why hockey has four lines, why soccer games stall, why basketball games have more fouls and subs, and why baseball games have built in breaks...it is HARD to be running that fast for 60-90 mintues straight.

Like its long been a story in America that there are tons of pure athletes who would KILL in soccer if that's what they dedicated their athleticism to...but american football or basketball was more common and more profitable so they picked those up instead.
