While Europeans were traditionally classified as “Caucasian” in older racial categories, human genetics do not fit rigid labels. Romans were Italians, but their empire mixed Europeans, North Africans, and Middle Easterners. If Rome had a census, checking the race box would’ve been a nightmare. :)
It's a complicated issue for sure, like Europeans settling in America, the Moors and other ethnic groups settled much earlier in europe. In most cases... violently. The racism around that still exists to this day in places like Italy and Portugal.
