I watched the movie for the first time in the cinema, shortly after the Sight and Sound poll was released. I almost fell asleep twice but despite this, I left the cinema elated, feeling like I'd seen something great. I agree with you though, no way on earth it's better than Singin + numerous others

I watched it for the first time this week. It’s great as an intellectual exercise. But when it comes to transcendental style cinema, I prefer the likes of Ozu or Yang. Something more for you to chew on. I think Sophia Coppola’s Somewhere is more thrilling than JD. JD doesn’t make my top 100.

Would it be edgelord bullshit to consider it one of the 10 best? That's how it works at point of voting: you submit a ballot of 10 equally weighted films. It's very likely that those JD ballots also included Mulholland Drive, Singin' in the Rain and others.
