Annie, I'm seeing this too! It's not performative, but it does feel, at some level, like a thoughtful rebellion against a culture that is pushing them hard in other directions.
A student came up to me after class to ask how I write an essay when I have an idea I want to explore--like, what my process is in the absence of an assignment. I told him about pomodoros?
Being sincere, caring about quality, and rejecting mediocrity have a countercultural vibe.
Also frustration with the endless grind and accumulation that's become the norm for college applications. There's a desire for "real" unmediated experiences that aren't just another line on a resume.
