There are some things that we just have to take people at their word about.

Being a firefighter is something you can prove about someone with work history, photographs. Gender and sexuality are things we take on faith. There's nothing that could empirically prove it. That's how they deny we exist.

A person could have sex with a dude and not be gay or have sex with a woman and be gay. A cis woman could get a mastectomy and PCOS facial hair and still be a woman, but when I get top surgery and go on T to grow a beard I'm a man. The only difference between us is how we identify. That's really it.

like, transphobes who don't identify as "cis" don't cease to be cis, because that's a word we use to describe people's relationship with the sex they were assigned around birth

That's because cis is just defined as "not trans". The only way we know those transphobes are cis is because we believe them that they're not trans. It's faith in their word about their identity.
