Yeah, exactly. They really want to put communism on the same level as fascism. They constantly talk about the death toll of 'communism', for example, but capitalism is totally fine.

there's a concept called the double genocide theory which describes attempts to conflate the actions of nazi germany with the actions of the soviet union, which became useful for both nazi apologists and people who wanted to position fascism as being ideologically closer to communism than capitalism

the broad appeal to academics and journalists in the west (such as via the black book of communism) was that asserted that the soviet union collapsed not due to any systemic factors, but because communism is simply evil and that liberal economics thus represents the only possible way forward

like with fukuyama's the end of history and the last man, the purpose is less to proclaim the virtues of capitalism, but to assert that no other society is possible, to assert that the capitalist world they live in and benefit from will be eternal

(incidentally fukuyama increasingly felt cynical with his own work over the past decade or so, due to the ways that rising fascism in the west may not be all that good for *ze price stabilité* and his general position in society)
