Luke here... I've never said this on social media, but I have Bipolar II disorder. I was diagnosed when I was 19 and have been on medication ever since - it really did change my life (I almost failed out of a college during a depressive episode a year earlier which led to therapy...)

Anyway, the stigma around mental illness is very real, and I say that as someone with a mental illness... Even for me, it's difficult to bring up in conversation - like, I worry it'll bum people out or immediately turn into a heavy topic... which, for the vast majority of the time, it isn't.

Man, that sounds awful ... I was initially diagnosed with social anxiety disorder/depression and prescribed an SSRI. After a few weeks I was in a full blown hypomanic state which was *not fun* (I get a lot of mixed episodes)... They realized it was bipolar disorder and got me on the right meds...

I’d suggest finding a psychiatric nurse practitioner. They typically have better availability and they have more time. Also, check into GenoMind or GenoWise, both genetic testing w/mouth swab to see what class of meds may or may not work best for you. Also says if you’re a fast metabolizer or not.

Moreover. I think of the families who have dealt with mental illness. A soldier parent home who has PTSD. A child who battles bi-polar. The gripping anxiety and/or depression others battle. Making one member sick again affects the whole family, too. The repercussions will be massive.

Some patients without medications will disrupt not only themselves - less productive and more disruptive
They will disrupt lives of their family members, co-works and schools
They may act out - and have others respond to that - esp in a society in which people may use guns to hurt
