Something that doesn’t seem to get mentioned so much is that without the proper representation of the 93%, the output these privileged leaders oversee just seems to get blander and shitter. I don’t want to be mean, but many of privately educated leaders in the arts aren’t as special as they imagine.

Invariably these privileged leaders determine that what’s needed is more ‘working class’ commissions that they can decide are best suited for the other 93%. If they’d all just fuck off out the way, they’d soon see that state educated creatives don’t need their leadership to produce their best work.

Truthfully, the best people I worked with or for in film and TV were state educated. The worst were privately educated. That’s a very personal experience, obviously, and perhaps if I’d been privately educated too, I might have felt very differently. Doubt it, though. I did meet some real arses. 🙂

This is also true in science. Innovation and creativity seems to be squashed out of the private school kids, replaced by measuring success as moving up the greasy pole (and only funding science that suits their field of knowledge).

The advantage of public schools is the connections made, hence we get PMs like BJ. It isn't one's talent but who one knows. My husband is a world renowned expert and author in his field et when his boss retired they brought in an outsider with my husband having to 'cover' for him. You can guess why.

They never did. After film school, my brief foray into TV was an acute reality check that no matter my creativity; I wasn't fitting the media set. It's like politics. Went for job doing media for labour; interviewed by Tarquin, India & Florence; I thought: I'm the only working class person here
