Minor snow clearing annoyance I have, living on a street that all the sidewalk plows use to get back to the city depot. After this past storm I saw literally dozens of sidewalk plows drive down my street, but it was more than two days before any of them actually plowed the sidewalks on my street.
Obviously the priority is clearing the main streets and not my local street, but it just seems inefficient to have dozens of plows driving down the street, some even driving on the sidewalk but with the blade/blower lifted, and then to send yet ANOTHER plow out to actually clear it days later.
With all the plows coming in and out of the depot, if we had them leave and return along all the different streets leading to/from the depot, while ACTUALLY plowing, surely that would be more efficient than having a bunch of plows just driving around and NOT plowing, right? 🤷♂️
It is all still a mystery to me, which is why Jeff and I are seeking answers. I need to understand the logic, so I can explain it to people, at the very least …
Councillor @jleiper.bsky.social and I have written to city staff to ask for an explanation, so we can answer all of the questions we are getting from you and also improve service when the next extreme weather event happens.
I'd like to see snowplow contractors be required to plow the sidewalks and bus stops in the vicinity of the private parking lot they are hired to plow if they wish to remain licensed to operate in our city.
I second this.
We're 10 days past the "extreme" events and the bus stops at Preston and Somerset are still snowbanked in.
Super frustrating to watch the elderly struggle for bus access in an already dismay public service.
Thank you! It’s utterly mystifying, and I appreciate your shout-out to the workers in the ground doing their best and you and Councillor Lieper asking for clarity—and hopefully more sensible prioritization.

The absolute bare minimum of removal was done midweek last week. The stops are still barely useable in either direction.
Why?
