In his CNN interview, he made a strong case that he's embracing change, and sounds to me like he's a better option than Assad. Before WWII, the Axis Powers were about 1/3 as wealthy as the Allies. Russia and Iran are meaningfully smaller than that compared to allied democracies, as well as being smaller demographically and less competent militarily. Overextension was inevitable, starting the fight was hubris.
