The lack of an "answer" was never the problem there. It makes sense (mechanically) in the narrative and "pays off" (on paper) in the thematic beats of the story they're trying to tell.

I think it would've been better if he used all of his more experienced powers, saving people from Zod during the whole fight, trying to get him away, until ultimately realizing he had NO other choice.
