Bewick's Swan is a rarity in Northumberland, too. Last record: 31 March 2019, almost 6 years ago.

Why is this important?

Bewick's Swan was first discovered in Northumberland. It no longer winters in its region of discovery. Thomas Bewick would be devastated.

I'm not sure what its official status is now! It declined and crashed out so quickly - until 2019 it was annual in small numbers. Not checked in full, but 2020 may be the first year with no records since the species was described in 1830?? Since then, no entries, so no comment . . . 😨

As of 23/11/24 it isn't a county rarity https://www.ntbc.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/guide-to-submitting-records-23rd-November-2024-update.pdf. Always been a major rare up here as we're well north of historical range/flyways. >25 records with none since 2014.
