Hey COS, congrats on the new journal. I was curious about this line: "Published submissions are eligible for review by a collection of evaluation services from traditional holistic peer review to experimental human and machine-based evaluations." How will machine review be conducted?

The machine-based services we've partnered with are primarily assessing particular aspects of eligible submissions. For example, RegCheck uses LLMs and AI to automatically compare preregistration plans with scientific publications, while StatCheck can be considered a “spellchecker for statistics”.

Cool to see statcheck & regcheck being used here. How about Paper Wizard, which seems to promise content-related review for any topic? Will submissions be used to train Paper Wizard models and what happens to those data following submission? Their website seems a bit light on details.

Paper Wizard doesn’t train on submissions, but as Brian said, Lifecycle Journal uses open licensing. For Lifecycle Journal, PW is intended to be additive and a separate service from holistic human peer review.

Content published in Lifecycle Journal will be openly licensed for permissive reuse.

I don’t know Paper Wizard’s plans specifically but such uses are consistent with such open licensing.

Thanks, Brian & Eileen. Any chance you can please say a bit more about what exactly Paper Wizard will be used for at Lifecycle? Is there any other info about Paper Wizard anywhere, who owns it, how it works, accuracy, etc? Desktop vs. mobile site has a tiny bit more info, but really not much.

I guess the other evaluation services listed have more info, like the team behind the initiative/service with names, etc., and funding sources, and so Paper Wizard seems an outlier here in terms of transparency.
