Thanks for sharing this. I wonder if there's any correlation between the enormous loss of community amenities and facilities for *getting together* that's happened over the last 35 years due to #GreatBritishPubcoScam private equity profiteering on British culture by running pubs into the ground

Hi Mark, I think most researchers think communities are key; this paper doesn't look into that, but rather the role of prior loneliness (some people have always been lonely), quality of relationships (you may see people but does that help?) and increased loneliness due to deteriorating health etc

Agreed - my mother was very interested - she worked a lot with Freinds House in London on policy for ageing but never really told me very much about what the work was. She helped set up Bell View in Belford

Thanks Debora for responding. Loneliness is something I'm very interested in, for many reasons, which began with my being a publican and seeing how important a really decent pub was to many people who live alone.

I wonder if you knew Marjory Dodds, my mother? Quaker and Age UK Northumberland

I didn't but she sounds a special person. I gave a feeling there was some research done about twenty years ago about the importance of pubs for older men (vague memory). So central.
