"Car-brain" is in our DNA in the motor city. It's not surprising that the (traditional) home of auto manufacturing, whose landscape and communities have been defined by dependance on cars, is a leader in the negative aspects of car culture.
We'll fight change because we've never known better.
That said, every community that has embraced mixed mode transportation is the type of place you'd actually want to visit. Looking at midtown, ferndale, hazel park, and more.
On that note, I was given some hope seeing an outsider's perspective on "new" Detroit. While acknowledging the complexities of the City, and knowing that they couldn't possibly be covered in a three day trip, CityNerd did a nice job of a quick overview focusing on non-car mobility:
