Thank you for this. The problem with this issue is that most people, including me, don't understand the technicalities of who gets what, when and how. The cost is certainly astronomical and unsustainable. It will be interesting to see the impact assessments in due course.

It's not - it's about having a grace period to be able to take on work and not necessarily have to change your benefits status/be able to retain the benefits level you're on in case it doesn't work out. Basically all the charities concerned agree it's a good move.

If you take work you don't have to change your benefits status during a grace period, so your benefits are guaranteed if it doesn't work out. It's a good thing. There's a reason all the charities in the area who are opposed to many of the other changes here are all universally in support.

Ok but who decides what constitutes “doesn’t work out?” If you go back to the job centre and say “it wasn’t a good fit” will that be sufficient? I don’t think so.

The point is you don't have to change your status the way you do now til a certain amount of time in the job has elapsed. Currently taking on a job of any kind full stop counts as enough for you to have to change your status and lose the benefits. Again: there's a reason all charities are in favour.

That’s not true though. You can take on work currently without losing your benefits provided it’s under a certain threshold.
