As head of the combined UFW, Chavez campaigned against illegal immigration because farm owners would often use so-called illegal immigrants as strikebreakers (scabs) against striking UFW.

Chavez later embraced the teachings of the Synanon cult, used non-union labor & forced out "non-loyalists ".
