lol I realized I will lose followers for first suggesting AI to help with writing alt-text for images, and now for streamlining developers' work. Well, c'est la vie.

Where did the training data come from? Where does the energy for training and inferencing come from? Where will the senior engineers who can effectively use AI come from once AI kills the junior engineer pipeline?
It's like any new tool introduced to humans. It can do some really good stuff, that's overshadowed by how much people always find a way to make it do something bad. It's why we can't have nice things.
Is it going to kill the industry where a bunch of people used multiple track recording studios to make money off of musicians, eh, maybe, or maybe it's just going to make the multiple track recording studios that suck go away
I’ve been trying to get my students to get that all these things that fall under “AI” are not the same. I like TA—it would make me feel like the uni was giving me a teaching assistant again after a decade since I last had one!
It's gotten really good at it (below some examples). It's still a good idea to verify its output, but it notices details I'd miss, and in general is pretty helpful.
It sucks that AI is so frequently associated with machine to steal work from artists. Seems like there should be a million good uses for it. Feel like there’s gonna be this weird divide going forward.
That’s not the only issue that people have with Gen AI. Besides IP there’s the impact on the environment plus other ethical issues. The fact that these companies are in a race to stand up new data centers while our planet is on fire is the most concerning part to me.
Yeah that is really problematic. I think part of the reason is these companies are now showing AI everywhere, whether it's needed or not (how many people actually want Copilot in MS Office, or Gemini in their GMail?) I really hope this bubble will burst soon.
Yeah. There’s lots of dumb tech shit that seems to have cool applications. But they’re going about them so forcefully and poorly that I’m afraid the ideas will die before they’re actually good.
I’m not denying it’s very useful, but this is still a machine built on the stolen work of others. Even if it’s only working with code, it’s using large language models trained on masses of internet text. Artists and writers are part of the training even when the output is code.
My job as an animal educator/nature account revolves around alt-text to provide information that isn’t easily accessible, so I think it’s perfectly understandable because it helps people. Sucks “ai” tends to be associated with those crummy generative videos that spread misinformation.

Right now "spicy auto complete" and "AI" are interchangeable descriptions for some software and there's some that it isn't.
