My Dad wrote the names of encampments of the 45th Light Anti-Aircraft around the edge of his ukulele head. Faded now and only Sidi Barani is readable. An illegal record at the time, I believe
It gets better - the original uke head broke & my Grandad got a pig bladder from the butcher & sent it to Tunisia in a Tam O'Shanter tobacco tin & Dad stretched it & fitted it as a replacement. It survived the War, Italy occupation & it still works - faded writing, visible blood vessels and all.
My father issued himself a driving licence while he was in the Royal Engineers. He added in permission to drive βa track laying vehicle steered through its tracksβ so he could have a go on the battalion bulldozer. That extra qualification stayed on his licence for fifty years.
