I dunno, replace "major political candidate" with "Donald Trump" and the sentence changes a lot? If you didn't know he had a history of lying in 2024...
this person is 24. I reiterate she was dumb about this decision, there is not debating that. but tuning out is not the same moral decision as assessing holistically and embracing.
not saying she was consciously aware of either of these but the institutional truth tellers at the new york times also said that mister trump had no intention of carrying out those policies and a lot of information is downstream of that
For sure but not sure how connected that is to the tiktok "news" streams. I think not so much? And I'd bet money she got almost all her election news from tiktok.
The media certainly fucked the country but as a confirmed NYT Hater I think we undersell social media algorithms and overstate the press
respectfully, receiving snippets of information and actually evaluating it critically are not the same thing. there is a reason that liberal arts educations are so highly prized!
I'm not sure "tuned out" means "does not critically analyze data"
I just don't see in what world someone who knows project 2025 wanted to fire a lot of feds, and what Trump's IVG policy is was tuned out. That's what I expect from someone voting for him because of eggs.
Well, lets consider the context here. She isnt some kind of freshly arrived half literate Latino guy with limited language skills looking up to Trump as some kind of richer version of himself. She has a Master degree ! And her political literacy is Tiktok 10 yr dementia level ? Are you kidding me ?
A lot of people (including the news organizations doing these profiles) should do some introspection about how so many Trump voters could be woefully misinformed about basic aspects of his candidacy.
Yeah, maybe we can also do a piece about how voters who consumed non-traditional media became: (a) ironically detached from the notion that elections have consequences; (b) fundamentally misinformed about those consequences; and/or (c) some degree of fascist.
Like maybe we should get a leopard-eat-face piece about an NYT editor or a Politico columnist who sanewashed, downplayed, & obscured what Trump was running on. I think that would be more helpful, honestly.
Unfortunately, those ppl are priveleged enough that theyll likely never face the consequences of the presidency they helped install, so not much there in terms of a "and here's what happened to them" profile I feel like
I certainly agree there is a bloc of voters (upper class, suburb, owns a giant truck, $100,000+) who have a childlike ignorance about their actions have consequences. They’ve never *truly* faced them before.
All I gotta say is: Get ready to speak Great Recession, buddy.
Agreed. Also, from a purely pragmatic perspective, the only way we are going to get out of this mess is to persuade several million of the 77 million Trump voters to turn against the administration. As much as I disagree with her vote, I have sympathy for her and take no glee in her suffering.
The distinction between dumb/incurious and evil is important. This is why news outlets have a responsibility to report the reality and not act as transcription services.

I don’t think it’s off the table to put media outlets, as institutions, on the couch & reflect on their role in creating that info environment.
