We computationally modeled people's decision-making in the Iowa Gambling Task following experimental manipulations of alcohol intoxication (BAC = .06%) and negative mood. In this task, people need to learn to make adaptive decisions from information about rewards and punishments.

Our computational model revealed that people tended to make worse decisions when intoxicated and possibly also when in a bad mood not because they were insensitive to punishments but because they were more sensitive to rewards.

While this does not tell us something directly about real-world decision-making, it tells us something about the ability to trade off rewards & punishments when intoxicated in an artificial environment, which can pave the way for more naturalistic approaches. Check out our paper for the details!
