By going so hard, so illegal, so fast, in so many ways, Trump and Musk have put SCOTUS in a position where saying "no" might well destroy the administration. There's no gradually putting on some brakes.

Even a lot of the research on motivated reasoning and how it works seems to overemphasize social value aspects and underemphasize the real monetary benefits of being part of an economic ecosystem built on false foundations overriding other values. Our entire framing of this moment is insufficient.

Fundamentally people want to both believe that they are good people and be physically comfortable, and plenty of people are more than willing to meld the two together in their minds and supplant any previously held values with the ones that align most effectively to physical comfort.

There are a lot of people who five years would have sincerely told that you that the president can't overturn birthright citizenship, and who will now sincerely tell you that he's constitutionally mandated to, and at least some of them are in the judiciary.

I mean that's true, but I do think the Supreme Court will say no to at least *some* of the craziest stuff the Administration does. Which isn't to say they won't let a lot through.
