I think reverse causality is worth considering, but I agree this is still evidence against the welfare state actively undermining this type of moral character.

If you want "the other side" the strongest empirical claim i have thus far seen against welfare states and "moral character" is this paper causally identifying a dependency culture that is intergenerationally transmitted.

Thanks, but I was more thinking of the claim that trustworthiness causes trust that causes support for the welfare state that causes a larger welfare state

But a lot of the stereotypes existing in peoples minds about welfare state culture have very little to do with the reality of countries with big welfare states and are extrapolated from stereotyped projections unto the poverty of those receiving inadequate welfare in their own cultures.

I can totally believe that.

I do think that the fact that Scandinavia works so well is a problem for many conservative claims. (Another one is the claim that falling religiosity leads to societal breakdown.)
