Don’t get me wrong, some level of responsibility is amazing for career development but that notion of having to become a manager to progress is killing people and driving talented folks into stagnation.

The book "The Art of Leadership" by Michael Lopp talks about this subject. Saying "Management is not a promotion...Your first role in management is a career restart." I think it should be treated as something separate and allow people to still become mentors or leadership and remain an IC.

Dual-track career paths are so important in design and development. When people management is the only option for career progression, who leads the work? Not everyone wants to be a people leader. Promote your best ICs, pay them well, and let them lead vision and mentor the next generation.

yes please.

In my current structure, the 'way' to influence the vision is by assuming a management role, but damn that is a loosing game as you now have to deal with all the bureaucracy of business politics as well as trying to carve some space for actual UX.
