If you haven't already, I recommend following up with Catch 22. 1984 does a great job of communicating the mindset of European authoritarians and the Fascism of 20th century Europe, and Catch 22 does the same for the American variety. It's also one of the funniest books I've ever read.

if you’re into political fiction i recommend “the fountainhead”, definitely not the greatest read if you’re looking for something on the more political side (not because it lacks but the ideals it pushes are terrible) but as a fiction novel it was an enjoyable read.

It's a good read overall and I think it's an important story but I also feel like it drags a lot in its first two parts. I was hooked by it initially but then just got kind of tired of it until the third part. I think the third part is fantastic and is where most of my fondness towards this book is

Yeah, fair that. I remember reading somewhere that the footnotes denoting newspeak terms use the past tense implying the party has been disposed of by the time the book is published, so the book does, in a way, show that it’s unsustainable in the end

There's an appendix describing Newspeak generally that's in the past tense, IIRC, but I don't think it gives you any more detail than that.

Such a good book, I remember reading it pretty young and just being thrown off by how unfair I perceived it. I hadn't ready anything up to that point quite like it, where the MC is just utterly defeated.

i reread it a few years ago after having read it back in highschool for the first time. its good, but it also feels very much of its time, not that modeling potential dystopia is necessarily a metric by which to judge a novel. have u read Brave New World? its interesting to contrast them.

I have not read it, but another commenter also recommended it and I'm getting my hands on it soon. I also was recommended "We" by Yevgeny Zamyatin, so thanks to Booksky my TBR is getting quite a few grim additions. It's very nice seeing everyone's thoughts.
