It's not about seasonal shedding of antlers. Deer can lose them too early due to malnutrition and stress as well, basically their body starts to fail and malfunction. That's what the idea was about

Yeah, it's actually interesting. Cuz at the same time those deer, who got less food on winter, keep their antlers a little bit longer, which allows them to fight off competition for food during spring (same goes for north reindeer, but females)
